“This is a really good opportunity for young Australians to get the chance to be involved with the environment,” said Anne-Marie Smith, director of the Australian Environment Protection Program.
“You can be working for your own community, you can be in the field, you’re just getting a real sense of what the environment is all about and what it takes to make it work.”
Ms Smith said the program was open to all Australians.
“So, you might be a local councillor in Canberra, you could be working in your local town or rural community,” she said.
“There are opportunities for you to do work for a local community or local government agency, you’ll be working on a regional issue, you will be working at the national level, you have opportunities for your local organisation to hire you and it’s all really exciting.”THE PROGRAMME’S NEXT STEP is for young people to apply for an internship and a full-time position.
“Our job is to make sure we have a pipeline of people who will be interested in working in the environmental protection fields, who can contribute in a meaningful way to Australian development,” Ms Smith said.WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE ENVIGONMENTAL PROTECTION PROGRAMME:AUSTRALIAN ENVISION TOOLDETERMINATION:The Environment Protection Skills Program is a three-year apprenticeship program which takes place in Canberra and surrounds and helps young people gain practical experience in the environment.
The program is designed to provide young people with the skills needed to undertake more sustainable projects.ENVIRONS ARE TOO COOL FOR THE REST OF THE WORLD:”We’re going to take the young people out of the environment, and into the local community, and get them engaged in the local environment,” Ms Wright said.
“They’re going for something really different.
They’re going there to learn something new, they’re going with a vision.”THE ENVECTIVE PROGRAMME IS ONLY OPEN TO THE AUSTRIAN COMMUNITY.YOU CAN HELP:The program is available in Canberra at the Centre for Excellence in Environmental Science (CESES) and in Melbourne at the University of Melbourne.
It is open to students from age 17 to 23, students from the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), students from universities, students studying in the arts, students with skills in construction, students interested in being a park ranger or a conservation professional, students who want to learn more about the environment and have a positive attitude about the natural world.
“It’s a really big opportunity to give back to the community and give back our environment,” she added.
